Common DIY Plumbing Mistakes

It is not uncommon for homeowners to venture on do-it-yourself plumbing. Some do it because they are after saving money, while some do it to simply learn new things. Should you decide to go this route, it would be most helpful to keep in mind the most common do-it-yourself plumbing mistakes to watch out for. This way, you are not going in completely blind, and will have better chances of successfully completing your plumbing project.

1. Forgetting to turn off the water

A surprising but very common mistake done by homeowners is not turning off the water before repairing a leak. Out of panic perhaps, people could attempt to fix a leak and stop the dripping without turning the main valve shut. Do not forget the first rule in plumbing: shut off the water before doing any repair.

2. Overdependence on commercial cleaning products

When water begins to move slowly down the drain, the first solution people think of is to try to flush it down with drain cleaners. If the blockage is nothing serious, commercial drain cleaners will get the job done 90% of the time. There is a problem here, though. Drain cleaners have harmful chemical contents. Too much use will not only damage your drain in the long run, but also put your health and your family’s health at risk.

The good news is that there is an organic and eco-friendly alternative. Many have tried mixing vinegar with baking soda to come up with a home-made drain cleaning solution, and people have found this to work. Pour the solution down the drain and let it stay for about an hour, then flush with boiling water. That should do the trick.

3. Trying to put different pipes together

It is very easy and convenient for an amateur plumber to assume that all pipes fit and may be connected with each other. Well, they don’t. When replacing a leaky pipe or making new connections, take a close look at the old, original pipes and then match their size, fit and type. Don’t match galvanized iron and copper pipes, for instance. Doing so is risking corrosion.

4. Performing a quick fix

One of the biggest problems in DIY plumbing is the over eagerness to save time and money. You might just attempt to finish over the weekend a job that would otherwise take a professional plumber to complete in three days. Rushing plumbing work could result to having loose fittings, damaging the fixtures, mismatching pipes or ending up with unsightly pipes all over the kitchen or bathroom floor. You could easily get tempted to route the pipes where it is easy to do so without considering how the room would look like. There is a reason why plumbers would buy more pipes, valves and fittings: they want to hide the lines so that your home remains attractive.

5. Not calling professional help

Perhaps the biggest mistake of DIY plumbers is the tendency to try to do everything even when the problem obviously calls for a professional plumber. When pipes burst or get clogged beyond repair, it’s time to call a professional.

Basic plumbing issues can be handled by people on their own with the use of a plunger, plumber’s snake and other basic tools, and avoid paying a professional plumber. But making mistakes can be more costly in the long run. It is responsible to try to maintain your own home and do some repairs, but it is wise to realize that you need help and call a professional plumber when necessary.
